Seventeen
It was when we stood in circles in abandoned parking lots at night, learning how to smoke.
It was filthy words and filthier jokes.
It was turning from geek to make-out queen.
It was locking ourselves in our dorm rooms, building up our vodka tolerance.
It was midnight drives through Topanga Canyon, falling asleep to Led Zeppelin in the backseat.
It was casual dating and then serious dating.
It was skipping class.
It was ignoring home.
It was believing I was independent. Believing I understood the world, or at least pretending to.
Believing I was a grown-up.
Not knowing the first thing about being an adult.
